Class of 2011 Reflections

Our Eyes Were Opened

We came eager but ignorant
Full of ourselves and our purpose
But soon the I was stripped away, and left only we
And together, united, we embarked

We learned what it meant
To walk in another person’s shoe
We saw how labels create sterotypes
Learned what defines us, and them
And about barriers, real and imagined
And Todd’s tears fell down
Wet, real, and raw
They cried for all of us
They united us.
And our eyes were opened.

We stood in awe of an abundance of art,
Reveled in the richness of our history,
Saw all children as precious, and
Learned it was going to take a Fred.
And our eyes were opened.

We recognized the risks of blindness,
Saw the need where before we saw none,
Learned the emptiness of existence without purpose,
Glimpsed the depths of despair, and
Shuddered at incarceration.
And our eyes were opened.

We saw industry and growth
Recognized risk takers in business
Discovered humanity through Habitat
Looked into the eyes of those least capable among us
Witnessed the grace of those who dedicate their lives to them
And our eyes were opened.

We admired our collective crown jewel
That dazzling diamond that is our public education system
Understood that it is our foundation, our greatest weapon against poverty
And the block on which our economic engine rests
And our eyes were opened.

We grasped the true meaning of our courts
Learned that justice means rehabilitation, not just punishmen
That caring people can replace handcuffs
That juvenile intervention prevents delinquency
And our eyes were opened.
